    Hi!

New member. Just got Inland M1 from my wife as a Christmas gift. So far here is what I know about the gun:

    1. Inland Serial 3190424 - Made April/May 1944.
    2. Inland barrel stamped 12-43.
    3. Benicia Arsenal rebuild.
    4. Bottom of stock grip has a "P"
    5. Just below B.A. stamp is CAB

    Couple of questions...
    1. CAB was an Inspector at Benica?
    2. Stock marked U.S.iconC.G - does this mean Coast Guard issued?
    3. What is the P?

Welcome to the forum and the addiction of M1icon carbines! Great Christmas present! Merry Christmas, too. Looks like a very clean nice rebuilt Carbine. Definitely a KEEPER. The CAB stamp is an arsenal rebuild stamp, though exactly where slips my mind. Again, welcome the folks here are generous and knowledgeable.

    Matman,

    Welcome to the forum.

Very nice Christmas gift. A few more pictures might be helpful.
Do you have pictures of the markings in the slingwell, and the right side of the stock for an acceptance mark? The P in a circle on the grip was factory, I believe plain P was a reproof mark. Though it is a different font then normal.
Have you had a chance to take it apart and see the internal parts markings? I can't tell for sure, but looking at the last picture, there appears to be a cut for the selector switch?
The sling appears to be aftermarket.

    Good looking rebuilt carbine.

Your carbine was made about December 1943/ January 1944. CAB very well could be the mark for the inspector there at the time of rebuild. USCG mark may be Coast Guard and could also just a likely be from a dealer trying to make the carbine more appealing and maybe add so value to it. No easy way to know one way or the other. The proof P is as others have said done during the rebuild. A nice looking carbine and a great Christmas present.

I agree with Bruce. The Coast Gaurd mark is something I have never seen before. It might have been done by them or as Bruce said maybe someone trying to embelish a story. I have not seen any service mark their guns but units did, trying to deter theft from other units. Still a nice carbine and X-Mas present. Congrats!!

    Regards.....Frank

    Civilian Guard

    USCG

Wonder if its possible a stock could have been marked for the post War Civilian Guard?

    Info From Jim M,

To assist in guarding both German and American government and industry facilities, a Civilian Guard (CG) was included under the Labor Service. The Civilian Guard soon became known as the Industrial Police, and in 1948 those guarding American military facilities were designated Civilian Guard Battalions of the Labor Service.

The Guard battalions wore the uniforms of the U.S. military branch they served. Guard Battalions had their own barracks on the facilities of the branch of the military they served. Besides guarding facilities, they also guarded bridges, truck cargo, ammunition dumps, etc.

The Guard Battalions were armed with the U.S. M1icon carbine by the American forces they served. They carried their carbines while on duty and stored them in their barracks where they lived when not on duty. Guard Battalions served the American forces in Germanyicon up into the 1980's. When they no longer needed their carbines, they were returned to the U.S. forces that had provided them.

Too bad we can't get a clear view of the side of that stock to see if it is marked.
