Ored a Kragicon from the CMPicon ASAP. When it arrives put them both together, see what you've got. Good luck.

    Dave,

That is a good-looking rifle, for what you paid. It looks like the barrel is uncut, which is the main thing with a bubba job. The '96 rifles, a lot of them were "updated" at the arsenal, so you have several combinations of sights and handguard that would be legit.

Your rifle almost certainly saw service in the Spanish American War and is a good bet it saw combat. The pitting may be from tropical service. or it may be from later neglect.

    Rifle came in today.

Stock's basically firewood, but I have a feller that can make up a pretty good 1896 Rifle stock.

I think this rifle had a 1901 sight at some point.

    Bubba front sight.

    Redfield 70K.

Crying shame an extractor with that nice of finish was ground on.

That's as far as the bolt closes on a no-go gage. A little looser than my '96 Sporter, but not bad. The bore's even nicer than my OTHER '96. Seems like I have the midas touch IRT Kragicon bores.
