No.4 Mk.1 Firing Problem
hey all
it's been a long time since i've tried to fire my No.4 Mk.1 because of it's issue(s). i don't know what it is but near as i can figure out when it's fired the magazine shakes itself out of position enough to where, if i don't constantly tap it from the bottom it somehow jams the rifle. i've tried different magazines and that doesn't seem to help. any ideas on what it could be?

Can you see what specifically is jamming? eg; Is the magazine platform preventing the bolt from closing?
Probably a simple adjustment, just need to be sure of where to start.

i'm not certain. all i know is the last time i fired it i pulled the trigger and nothing happened. then i tried to work the bolt and it was immovable. i gave the magazine a smack and was then able to fire that round and i put it away.

Sounds like it might be the bolt not completely closed. Remove the bolt and check the bolthead is screwed right in before re installing it. Make sure the rifle is not loaded- remove the magazine too. Cock the action again and try to dry fire on an empty chamber. It won't hurt to do this. If it fires on an empty chamber, try it again with the magazine fitted, empty of course! If it still functions properly then you are up to live fire testing again. When you close the bolt, make sure the long rib on the bolt body in the is going right down onto the receiver boltway on the right side. If it won't close, don't force it. There may be another problem, Oh, check your chamber for obstructions first too.

Might want to try it before going to the range.

yeah, it functions properly. it's just like the concussion of the shot when i fired it before jiggled the magazine loose *shrug*

Does the mag catch spring forward w/ a audible "click" when the magazine is inserted?
It's not an SMLE mag is it? (Rib indentations continue all the the way to the bottom of the body unlike a No.4 mag.)

I'd also have a look at the safety to make sure it's assembled correctly and functioning properly.

yes it does click when the magazine is put it and yes it is a No.4 Mk1 mag.
and the safety i've disassembled and reassembled. nothing is wrong with that.
i'd take it to a gunsmith but around here there doesn't seem to be any period, let alone any who can help me with a vintage rifle.
