What is this?
Just acquired this rifle and am trying to figure our what I have. I know that it has a replacement Numrich .45 barrel, all other parts seem to be period. I believe that other parts have been mixed and matched however.
My question is, does it seem to you experts that someone was trying to restore a particular model rifle, and if so what model? Or, was someone just throwing parts together that do not resemble any particular model?
Not a serious collector, just would like to know if I have something that is a restored, repaired, "bubbaed" old milsurp or something that was thrown together and actually looks like a rifle.
Thanks
daveboy

It looks ot me like a modern creation using what could be either a vintage or repro 1863 Springfield lock.

AFAICTWAHTOIMH, looking at the wood and metal surfaces, especially on the pic showing butt and buttplate, that is all Italian repro parts, with the possible exception of the barrel bands. 2nd hole breakthrough at front of lockplate is not typical for Springfield.
Patrick
P.S. Springfield muzzle-loaders were typically 3-band rifles. The only pic of a 2-band Springfield I can find is of an Allin conversion, which also shows the breakthrough of the 2nd hole at the front of the lockplate. Futhermore, the overall pic of the rifle under discussion appears to show a joint in the shaft just in front of the lower barrel band. Front end wood also looks older than the butt.
So, present "best guess": Springfield 1861 lookalike using Italian repro parts, with possible barrel bands, lock components and front end of shaft from an Allin conversion.
