BSA markings question.
Yes...I'm still trying to build up my collection of reference books, but in the mean time....
1944 No.4 T MK1 BSA marked on the wrist as follows:
M47C
1944
N
36870
TR
Is there any significance to the "N" or is it just the precursor to the serial # as in N36870? I would expect the serial # to be all in one line.
I know what all the rest means.....
Thnx for looking
ick

It's the serial number prefix.

I may be wrong, but I suspect that if the N is above the serial number rather than at the beginning of it, then it may be that your rifle is one of the 'no prefix letter' run (?produced before the 'A' block early in 1944?), & the N is a Naval property stamp as seen sometimes on rifles issued to Royal Marine Commando units. I have not seen any written corroborration of this but have discussed the issue with Peter Laidler before now. I have two N marked No4T's & a N marked L42, so they're about.

I can't say anything about this, except that the Navy rifles I have were marked on the LEFT sde, toward the bottom, of the butt socket. But then, my Navy rifles are the older type: a Mark I*** and a Mark III*.
