Improvised carbine bayonet
Photo isn't clear enough to see how the lug was rigged up but it appears to be a fairly rigid attachment.

When I was in basic
We used to put down the bayonet until one of the DIs told us about a hill in Korea that the Chinese had refused to give up after repeated assaults. Finally an officer ordered "Fix Bayonets" and up the hill they went. The Chinese bugged out ASAP. Something about a guy with a sword on the end of that rifle......Getting shot is a surprise, having a guy gut you with a giant knife is terrifying.
