    Front sight blades

Anyone know a U.S. source for front sight blades?

I need to find -0.045 and -0.060 sizes particularly. Split dovetail.

    Cheers.

Ebay is pretty good for these. But if they are for a No 4 they only went down to -.030

I thought they only went down to -.030, that's all I have in my set of spares.

Would that mean that ePay 110603874683 were SMLE sights? Don't suppose they are interchangeable are they?

I guess I'll have to take 0.030 off a -0.030 blade to get zeroed then. Hope it won't look too much like a jerry-rig job. Might work, it's only thirty thou.

    Thanks for the input.

    Cheers.

    Welcome aboard, so to speak.

If you wish, you can read a previous thread (now on page 2) : "-.060 Blade, foresight on a Lee Enfield No 4 MK 2 rifle !".

It looks like that those -.060 and -.045 blades do exist but nobody knows where they come from. The fact remains that I have a -.060 blade on my No 4 MK 2 rifle. I bought that rifle as is in Canadaicon about twenty years ago.

For now, it's a little conundrum.

Thanks Snowy, that is an interesting post.

Interesting too that the base itself on a -0.030 blade is already so thin, I can't see that there is enough "meat" to loose another 0.015 or 0.030 without leaving just a dovetail with a blade on top! A conundrum indeed.

Did I read somewhere that there were two different sight bases, giving a different height above the bore line as a base for the sight blades?

I realise, as referred to by the good Captain, that needing a non-standard height infers that there is a problem somewhere, and I am aware of it. The fore-end is slightly warped, and curves up in the middle and down at the front and rear. This produces a down pressure at the muzzle instead of an up pressure. It really should be re-stocked, but not only does it have the most beautiful woodwork I've seen on an Enfield, but it groups reasonably well. I decided to accomodate its oddness, rather than try anything drastic, and maybe make it worse.

I've reduced the blade on a -0.030 by 30 thou, and it doesn't look too bad. I'll try it and see how it goes.

Thanks for the input, most appreciated.

    Cheers.

Try calling Springfield Sporters - although they don't list your size, they may have if requested

Are the blades for a No. 5 different than for a No. 4?

No. Apparently the Army thought they were and gave them different part numbers but a famous(?) armourer who lurks around here says, that in his day, they used the parts interchangeably. Taking that advice, my No.5 has a No.4 (it says on the tin) foresight.

I went through Fulton's big box of blades, and Teflon Fred's one as well (both thoroughly mixed up, and contaminated by the odd one which some genius had decided years ago to file down because it "does the job, dunnit?") and I could not find any in these two sizes and varieties. You could make a saw cut in some solid ones to get the effect, I suppose.
