Now they procure local or civi of course...they used things like the "Gator" for runaround on bases like Kandahar when they were there. That idea was just ahead of it's time.

I had a Polaris Ranger during my deployment to Iraq. I drove it pretty hard.

I probably did kill it. The last two weeks there it died and I couldn't get it to the maintenance shop. Then someone deliberately flattened the right rear tire. Finally someone came up to BNHQ and took it away with a fork lift. I doubt it was repaired. But I did a lot of work with it for my job.

I was issued an Iltis jeep in my last hurrah doing a recruit course because we'd gone to the defensive exercise and we had no vehicles allotted. I went to a man I had known for yeas and got this old out of issue jeep to use, I was one of few qualified to run it. I used it as a personal car until one evening while out four wheelin' on the sand roads I broke it...No repair to be allotted. They just scrapped it. They were a terrible jeep anyway.

No wonder the guy in the right front is smirking. The load's not secured and neither are they. In the case of the passengers, being thrown clear was probably preferable as the center of gravity looks much higher even than the M38 which was notorious for breaking necks in rollovers.

I drove an ILTIS from Stephenville NFLD to Greenwood, N.S. after a month long NATO exercise OP MARCOT on the Rock. The little thing would zip along real good on paved highways and the packet commander kept getting after me for getting too far ahead of the LSVW's and MLVW's. While on the Rock I had the use of a LSVW and took it out on the long runway which slopes gently to the sea and floored it. I believe to this day I still hold the World Land Speed Record for the LSVW.

We needed to take an LSVW out to the training area in Gagetown to visit a unit needing live fire umpires so two in the back and me up front with the driver because I knew the way. I forgot about how bad to ride those are and the driver was less than industrious so I had to slow him down in the off road a bit or kill our passengers. The screeching brakes were a memory I won't soon loose. The Iltis was OK for some tasks but they were horrible for any but the smallest once we put roll cages on them. We should have procured the GM hummer along side the Steyr MAN 10 ton 6X. Those would have been the only two we needed. I had BN transport Pl for a couple years and got to count all the different types of wheeled jobs we had. Ridiculous for a line Bn.
