Let me rephrase, any ideas as to why the marking were ground off? Country of origin?

Not an expert but will give my 2 cents. Receiver is an Izhevsk, the scope is an original WW2, the bolt could be original but could also be a repro (need side/bottom photo), the base appears to be cast steel and mount could be a Ukrainian repro as the marked them like that but then so did the originals (is the back rough milled?). What ground off markings are you talking about, you can't see the barrel shank clearly in the photos? The old scope number looks to be partially on the side of the barrel. Did they scrub the Izhevsk markings, date and serial number off the barrel shank? It could be a refurbed sniper, a restored sniper or a repro sniper. Does the stock have a [/] refurb mark on it or does the barrel have a [X] on it. Is the stock cutout for the base look newly cut?
Does it have any serial number on it? Import mark?

The pics suck but all the parts are original, not repro. the old scope # is there in full, it just doesn't show in the pics.

I'm hesitant to say much without better pics (more light needed), but it is CLEARLY refurbed at the least. The bolt is definitely renumbered. Can't tell if real of faked from the photos - need better pics in general. The gun is definitely soviet in origin, looks to be Izhevsk.
The mount base looks dubious to me. Looks cast, not machined. Need better pics of the scope and mount to confirm if legit or not. Floorplate is renumbered replacement.
The rear sight base is pinned, not screwed, so it's either a post-43, or it was refubed in the 1960's era.
Cheers!

The truth is it's getting harder and harder to determine what is real and what isn't as the repro made items are getting better and harder to spot. Where did you get the rifle? Is it one of the Rguns refurbed snipers? What import mark does it have on it? Why no pictures of the stock?

I know what you mean about the pics needing more light Claven, but for now I am restricted to taking pics in the basement(not much light at all). More pics are comming when I get the cosmo off. I know it has been refurbed, but why the grinding off of cyrillic letters & the top of the barrel? Thats not standard refurb procedures. It looks like the serials were stamped(original or not I don't know) & then the first two letters ground off & the whole mess reblued. both the base & the bolt have izhevesk stamps.

In the one picture it looks like a low wall receiver. They didn't use low wall receivers for the PU sniper. Is it a low wall receiver? Some of the early (years ago) Century repro snipers were built on Finn captured Mosins. Finns scrubbed the markings sometimes. Any sign of a [SA] mark on it?

Its a 44 izhevsk & no sa mark. The scope base threads in the reciever are blued so they are not recent tapped. As a side note I found two more numbers stamped into the butt near the serial. Both # are horizontaly oriented & are 869 & much deeper & partially erased 744.

I saw your post over on Gunboards, they are pretty savy over there so maybe they can help you. I saw the pictures of the stock. You have never said where you got it or if there is an import mark on it. Is it a secret?
