I finally got to fixing up a late war Savage I picked up a few weeks back. After a detailed cleaning and de-greasing I glass bedded the area in the front trigger guard, the area under the main screw on the receiver and the contact area to the rear of where the sear and mag release mounts. Then I dressed the wood just a wee bit to allow free movement and removed the sheet metal plate on the front upper handguard to prevent binding.I put cloth tape under the lower band to help tension the wood when assembled All in all there is about 0.020' of total movement of the barrel when assembled while still having a nice tight fit.
I staked the receiver just over the area where the sear contacts the receiver so that it greatly reduced the length of second stage pull. I ground the cocking angle back about .5 degree on the surface grinder and polished the contact area. the trigger pull came out better than I expected, much better. I blackened all the metal parts over the existing finish to bring it all together, it came out very nice, but, I don't know how long the blacking will stand up so I waxed it just to make sure. I hope to get a break over the next few weeks, so I can get it up to the range. I sure hope this thing shoots half as good as it feels-SDHInformation
