Galveston, Texas, question. OT
Has Galveston pretty much recovered and rebuilt after hurricane Ike? The current view on Google Earth, dated 2009, seems to show everything undamaged. I find that hard to believe but possible I suppose. Thanks for any information about it. Carl

It's still banged up pretty bad, I have a few friends that live there and
the big complaint is all the dead trees from the salt water. Bolivar and
Crystal Beach were basically wiped out. It will be a while before things
get back to normal. Most places around the seawall area have reopened .

A recent news report about Galveston showed that it has remarkably recovered, most of the businesses that is. I believe that the population count showed 10,000 less than last year. Those people may never go back.
Their main revenue is tourism so in that respect they must get that part, the Seawall and Beach attractions, going. The citizens, like most other parts of Hurricane Ike affected areas, are still fighting with FEMA to get full benefits. Governor Perry, the best dang governor in the whole dang country, has been very vocal in trying to help.
Right now with the new hurricane season officially on, folks in that area are starting to squirm again.

It will probably be like New Orleans and the Gulf Coast after Katrina. There will be places where everything is rebuilt and new and in others things that haven't changed since the wind and water left. It's hard to give a blanket statement to cover a large urban area after a natural disaster.

The big difference between Galveston and New Orleans is that in Texas we take care of things ourselves without waiting for uncle Obama to come in and hold our hands.
