Type 38 and 99

I picked up 2 rifles that I think are type 38 trainers. but I have begun to think that one may be a 99. There are no markings on the rifles of any kind no mums, serial #'s or anything else stamped in the steel. the one I am thinking is a type 99 has a cartuche mark on the butt stock. Question is how do you tell a type 38 from a 99? I will take some pics this weekend adn post them on PB.

Question is how do you tell a type 38 from a 99?

Very simple. The Type 38 uses a 6.5mm bullet, the Type 99 uses a 7.7mm bullet. Even a simple slide gauge will show up the difference. Or, for instance, a 9/32 drill will go into the muzzle of a T99, but not a T38.

Now that is way to easy! Are there any differences in appearance?

Sometimes Type 99's have anti aircraft wings.....
General guidelines...
A type 38 will have 2 gas escape holes in the receiver.
The type 99 rifle has a single gas escape hole.

The Type 99 was also originally produced with a wire bipod that was hinged on the middle band and snapped up into the front band when not in use. Although these bipods are often missing, the two barrel bands on the Type 99 are noticeably "chunkier" than those on the Type 38.

It is clear as mud now actually it is cleared than that I believe I have a 38 and 99 trainer I will post pics tomorrow I an taking pics of several of my rifles over the weekend.
