Baikal TOZ-8m-01?

recently acquired this gun and was wondering if anyone knows anything about it. I'd originally purchased it with the idea that i was going to cut and recrown the barrel to 18.5 inches and cut the stock down to fit my son, with a scope and a bipod. I've discovered that it's a soviet training rifle? I guess i'm not going to bubba it any worse The only markings are the serial number (matching on all parts) and "Made in USSR" (unfortunately under a drilled and tapped scope mount). This gun also has a colt butt pad, and i'm not sure if the checkering is supposed to be there or not.

Reg cert says Model: TOZ-8m-01. I've done a little looking around and it seems they were made as TOZ-8, TOZ-8m and TOZ 8-01, but not 8m-01 (uness they're an elusive rarity ). Anyone else have one to compare?


Anyway, it's a good little shooter as far as I can tell. i can keep them in the black at 40 yards with CCI CB shorts, and it probably will do better than that (see below). Going to mount a 3-9x40 scop on it and see what it can do with wide variety of cheapish and middle of the road ammo.

the one problem that I'm having is that the rear sight spring is missing. I'm looking at it thinking it looks a lot like a nagant sight, but don't have one to compare, and is quite similar to the sks sight. think i can make a nagant or sks spring fit i'd like to find a proper one somewhere...anyone know where to get parts for these?

I had troube getting pics, my cave is a little dim, but the original hooded front sight is there. Wood is about 98% except for it has a strip of that bedding paper stuff in the barrel channel, and metal and bluing is aboout the same.

I got a TOZ 8-01. Wood is different, also rear sights - my are much simpler (here with my zastava M-56):

Who is manufacturer of Your rifle - Tula, Baikal? Btw - TOZ8 is very accurate rifle. With proper Ammo You can shoot a 10 rounds "clover" at 50m.
