Need help on a barrel on a carbine

3year ago I contacted a guy about a carbine but it was a 250 mile round trip. I told him if I ever got out that way I would stop in. The other day I called him and he said he would be in my area Sat and could bring the carbine. He still had it.
I have a problem with the barrel. The receiver is a Saginaw S/N 3,276,136 with a Inland Mfg. Gen. Motors 44 Barrel, and then the dreadful Import mark Exel Gardner, MA.
The S/N # is within the early first number block. Carbine has all the latest up grades but no rebuild numbers on left side. The right side has a square block but no letters on the inside. He said wood is very nice.
I read some place that towards the end of production that maybe some others barrels were used.
Maybe this barrel was installed when rebuilt ??? He is not very knowledgeable about Cabines which I am also not but I can take my books with me. I hope he will let me field strip it. The up grades don't bother me and I can live with the import mark as Carbines prices have real shot up. I would not go over $ 750 - $ 800 and it has to have a good ME.

I would appreciate any advice you could give on the barrel.

Saginaw participated in the free issue barrel program, and some of the barrels used by Saginaw were marked with the Inland Mfg. Div. of General Motors marking.

The Saginaw in Grand Rapids (S'G') used free issue barrels. The Saginaw in Saginaw (SG), with possible exceptions during their "clean up" of the Grand Rapids operations during spring 1944, generally did not.

I may not be able to see if it has the S' G' or the S G marking because of rear sight and may have to resort to the tin foil and string method to get the numbers.
I mite get lucky and the barrel would be correct for the receiver # 3,276,136 but with my luck probably not. This would be my 3rd and last one as I have 3 sons to leave these to.
Unless I would get lucky when CMP puts the 1300 carbines up for sale maybe some time later this year.
I am going to try for a international harvester M1 Garand also ????

No need for tin foil, S'G' and Saginaw made totally different receivers, Under the wood S'G's will have an ear on left side, above the wood the run-out on the op rod channel will be square.
Saginaw had no ear and op-rod channel is round. I would not get any high hopes about the 1300.

Nice to hear from you again.
I am still kicking myself for not getting that carbine you were helping me with. I really did not think this guy would still have this carbine when I called him because that was about 3 years ago. He ask me if I had bought any and I said yes 2- He said what kind of price range and I said 1 for $630.00 NPM, 1 for $ 700.00 Winchester, both nice shape and he said you can make me a offer after you look at it. ????? So will probably have to haggle some with him and maybe come home empty handed, but will only be out my time and 15 miles.

You really don't have anything to lose by looking at it. Some of the Import Marked Carbines are in really nice shape.

The right side has a square block but no letters on the inside. He said wood is very nice.

This may be a replaced stock or it could have been refinished, removing part of the CC and any rebuild stamp.

$$ wise your in the right ballpark.
