    Newbie Garand question.

I have bought an arsenal refinished Springfield M1icon Garand. AFAIK all the parts are original except the stock and the barrel. The receiver is serial # 369728 which would place it as made in october 1941. The seller said that the stock was an unissued wartime production.
Is there any way I can verify this claim?
Is it possible to find an SA stamped stock from that time?

    Thank you for your help.

(please bear in mind that I'm new to WW2 US small arms, so i'm quite ignorant)

I'm not really qualified to answer this since I'm a new owner myself, but my understanding is that a genuine GI stock would have an identifying cartouche of some sort.

Probably one of the first things you should do is verify that the receiver is genuine. Remove the stock and look for the drawing number and heat lot stamped into the right side of the receiver. Post the info here and someone will be along shortly afterwards to confirm whether everything matches as it should.

If you post the drawing numbers for the bolt, op-rod, trigger housing and other major components they can be dated too.

    Happy Thanksgiving.

Boatbod's right on the drawing numbers. Or if you post pics we can help. If the serial number's right then the stock should have GHS on the left and SA in the box with it. Ordnance crossed cannons should be beside the inspector's mark. Big P on the small of the butt and a circle around it. That stock could cost $1000 US. The odds are there are other deficiencies so pics will help us help you.

Would the cartouche also be applied to an unissued stock that was kept in reserve for replacement?

Anyhow, the numbers on the right side of the receiver are:

    R E 6 R KK
    D 28291-13 SA

    On the trigger assembly:

    D28290-12-SA

    On the bolt:

    D28287-12SA

    S-060

    on the barrel:

    SA F6535448 1 55 MD 49 P

    on the op rod:

    6535382 SA

There are no markings as whatsoever on the stock, but as I said I know for sure that it is not the original stock.

Would the cartouche also be applied to an unissued stock that was kept in reserve for replacement?

No - the stamp serves as an indication of acceptance after testing - From the GCAicon web site

    CARTOUCHE :

The collector term for the mark stamped into the left side of the stock upon original acceptance of the rifle by the government. The earliest stamps bore the initials of the manufacturer over the initials of the inspector under whose authority it was accepted. In late 1940 the Springfield Armory format was changed to use the initials of the armory Commandant. At Winchester the new type used GHD, the initials of the Chief of Ordnance. In 1953 the old cartouche was changed to the boxed Eagle and Stars called the Defense Acceptance Stamp. Springfield, Harrington & Richardson, and International Harvester all used the DAS from that time onward.

Sounds to me that you have a rebuilt mixmaster Garandicon and a story from the original owner.
Just enjoy her for what she is.
