Yes, it should have been a bit longer and here's why. A link to an auction that shows you the original rifle... http://www.gunauction.com/buy/8480805

Being as new as I am to this sort of info, would it be possible to source original wood and barrel bands for this rifle? I believe it would still fit even with the barrel being slightly shorter than the original.

Good luck on the wood, it's a bit scarce as is. Here in Canada, way more so. It would fit into the original wood but you can see how short it will be by comparison.

I highly doubt you will ever find original wood unless it is on a original rifle. These were only produced for a short time period, and in a small quantity (doesn't even just use the regular Krag stocks). You could possibly have someone make you a reproduction but I suspect it would cost a significant chunk of change (I could easily see in the 600$+ range).
I would enjoy it for what it is, to return it to close to original spec is next to impossible at this point without investing some serious cash (i.e. new barrel with the bayonet lug attached to it, new stock, new barrel bands unless you can find some).

I agree by the way, it's a 6.5X55 which is a common enough cartridge here and very useable for the game we have. Lots of deer have gone down to exactly that. I'd use it as what the previous owner or the conversion originator had planned. A deer rifle...
