    Old 03

I was given an 03 Springfield some years back and am looking for information on it. Serial #1835--. Behind the front sight is the letters SA and date 4-14. The stock was sporterized and I replaced it. Metal is very good. By the serial # it appears to have been made in 1905. I assume it was chambered in 30-03 and rebarreled to 30-06. I've shot with reduced loads but now sits in the safe. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

If your rifle is of Springfield Armories Manufacture, 1835XX was one of 150450 rifles made in 1906. Rifles under 269450 were recalled and chambered for the 30-06 Cartridge.

It is hard to tell too much about your rifle without further information. If the barrel date is correct, the rifle was probably rebuilt sometime before U.S. entry in WWI. As Buffdog said, it probably was originally in 30-03 caliber but was rechambered to 30-06.

If you can post some good-quality pictures, that would be very helpful.

I took pictures and will try posting later but here is what I found. On the barrel below the front sight is 4-14, SA and below that the #3.Half way down the barrel is stamped J43 and below that the #3. The bolt has the letter R stamped in several places and the rear recoil lug is stamped IM. The trigger is stamped CV 8147176. The reciever is stamped:
    U.S.
    SPRINGFIELD
    ARMORY
    MODEL 1903
    SERIAL #
    Hope this helps. Thanks again

The J43 is probably the steel lot code. The CV indicates the trigger dates from the late 1930s.

Sounds like your bolt is a Remington.
