M1 Ammo Carry "BAG" - What was this bag used for?
I've got this canvas bag labeled "M1 Ammo Carry Bag" and I don't know how it was used.
Can anyone help me find out what it carried and how it was used?
I'm thinking ammo for sure but in what kind of containers, loose or what?
It has a large pocket inside that is separate from the rest of the interior space;
standard GI type shoulder strap and flap cover that buckles closed.
Appears to be WWII vintage that should go with M1 Garand/30-06 ammo.
Any help is appreciated.
Thank you,

Here is the description from the website that sold these bags:
Salute to an old bag! Here's a 1942 spec Ammo Carrying Bag like the U.S. infantry used during WWII, along with the U.S. .30 cal. M1 Garand. Great collectible!
Cotton canvas
Black metal hardware
Protective flap with buckle
Drain hole
2"w. shoulder strap
"U.S." on front
"U.S. spec 1942" on back.
7" x 4" x 10"h., 1 lb.
It doesn't say how the ammo was carried inside or what kind of ammo container fit the inside pocket.

Thank you AZPhil,
I'm trying to get some pics going.
Repro M1 Ammo Carry Bag, Tan
It most probably held en-bloc clips but in what kind of configuration?
The inside pocket puzzles me.
Check this out, if you can go here there is a pic w/ the description.

Thats easy, I read some stories from the 101st airborne guys back in WW2, they were mostly used to wreak havock on the landing zone, and scare away anyone nearby. Not only did they fly off when the chute opened, but so did leg bags, & extra sewn on rigger pouches full of everything they could cram in them. That stuff was handy, but seldom made it to the ground with the guy that was wearing it when his chute opened. "That's what the WW2 guys said about them anyway" The intention was to carry extra ammo, or anything you could cram into it before the jump. Hence the old saying, if you don't take it with you, you won't have it. (Finding it in the drop zone) was a whole nother problem...

It's a GP (General Purpose) bag. M1 Garand clips, grenades, C4, anything and everything you could fit in it.
I have one I take to the range. The divider is great because that's where the empty brass goes when I'm done at the end of the day.

Better understanding for GI canvas Range Bag uses.
Thanks to all, so good!!!
I've got a whole new understanding for what this canvas bag was used for.
Oh yeah, I'll be filling mine with ammo and saved brass on range trips, too.
No grenades or C4 just en-bloc clips and water bottles.
The bag's GI shoulder strap can used on other stuff which is worth the price alone.

You should score one of these too. http://shop.sportsmansguide.com/net/....aspx?a=571932
This IS the bag all GI's used for everything! You can cram a lot of stuf in it including your lunch. I use one for Gun Shows to carry all the ammo and small scores in. You don't have to walkaround for 2-3 hours with hands or pockets stuffed full.
