    New Inland followed me home

Just went to a local gun show with plans just to browse but came across a carbine and it just followed me home. It is Inland ser. 66051x with 7-43 dated Inland barrel. Stock is Inland with faint cartouche, numbers stamped on one side, OI in sling well and hand guard as well but a funky sling with buckle on both ends. What's up with that?? Anyway, bolt is W marked as is the recoil plate and hammer is blued with W on one side and S on the other. The front sight has N and the rear sight SA and the bayonet lug/band JMQ (somebody stripped the screw and it wont tighten I just noticed). I can't find any markings on the trigger housing so I'm not sure what make it might be and haven't checked the sear yet but bolt is also W. The receiver has a nice greenish/olive color and the bore is nice and shiny with good head space and the muzzle gages right at 3 on a forster gage. Looks like a lot of Winchester parts.
I'm trying to locate my books but in the meantime does the serial number match up with the barrel date?

Well you have a typical rebuilt carbine. The barrel date is right for the serial number. I can tell you that your trigger is going to be marked IP or S'G'. The N marked front sight would be correct for Inland.

Thanks for the answer on the barrel/receiver. I have apparently lost my book with the manufacture/serial information. I'm going to check the trigger later when I have time to go through it all more closely. Just now saw the .U. stamping on the stock.

Nice Carbine! You don't have to replace the band, but can rehabilitate the screw and threads on the bayonet lug. First, get a new screw. Then peen the edges of the backside of the threaded portion of the band. If you use a sharp punch, hit it about 4-6 times around the edge of the hole, about 1/32 to 1/64" back from the edge. You have to whack fairly hard. I have done this on several mixmasters with perfect results. Good luck! when you finally tighten it, just nice and snug.

Thanks for that advice. I didn't want to replace it unless I had to as everything looks to have been together a long time judging by wear and finish. I'll give your suggestion a try but what might I substitute for a punch? I don't think I have one that I can recall.

You can use a 2 1/2" hardened concrete nail available in the bulk nails at most hardware stores. Should only cost a couple cents. They are short and fat, and have longitudinal grooves in them. It is very sharp, so it will work best if you take a file a SLIGHTLY blunt the tip (about 2 to 3 light passes) with a fine to medium file. get a couple extra nails in case you blunt it too much. Set the opposing side of the band against something hard like the top of an open vise jaw. If that is not available, use a block of hardwood like oak with a piece os steel on it.

they must have had a lot of Winchester parts on hand since it's almost all Winchester internally. I think the only thing not Winchester is the trigger.

Your sling is probably a Vietnam era USGI nylon carbine sling. They did not have front snap, just two buckles.
