Cutoff slots?
I know that following WWI many SHTLE Mk.III rifles without their magazine cutoff plates had them fitted or refitted. I've seen it stated on other forums that a number of MK.III* rifles had a cutoff slot milled into the receiver and a plate added during the same era. Is this correct? Seems like an awful lot of trouble to go to.

Yes...at least in India. Ref I.L.C. Para 12794 (TLE, pg. 364).

Some say the MkIII* that have a slot &/or cutoff with the star barred out were ealier MkIII receivers that were used up later but this does not explain the 1918 SSA & NRF star barred MkIIIs that can be found.
