Ww2 Weekend at MAAM 2018
Another year has just flashed by to what I consider the 3 day start of Summer 2018! An epic event as always - moved in Thursday eve and out by Sunday night. 2 160lb tents with a porch "canvas" rigged in between - all kinds of period cooking gear and rations on display. Sleeping in between lee enfields, bren, piat and 2" mortar and accessories. We played ruby with the neighboring Paratroopers. The only vehicle present for us was a T16 carrier - fully equipped, all else was in the shop for simultaneous minor repairs. Two nights of dance with epic sunsets, weather from hot and humid to overcast to brief spells of blustery with light rain. As you can see I focused on the warbirds when the crowd thinned. A good swapmeet for 70 year old+ gear if you were prepared to dig. Am so ready to go back next year Attachment 93755Attachment 93756Attachment 93757Attachment 93758Attachment 93759Attachment 93760Attachment 93761Attachment 93762

A happy Jim - having survived the sand stove lighting and almost boiled the pot for a cuppa.

We used the 160 pounders the whole time I was in, slept about 4/5 Snr NCOs as I recall...

In Pic # 5 the port trailing edge near the fuselage appears to be missing a fairing as you can see the rib for what I guess may be a flap but heck that is one shiny aircraft which appears to me to be the back end shot of a "Black Widow" P- 61 .
The "Memphis Belle is that a faker or the real one as a pic I have of her taken by my s/inlaw when she visited the states some 20 years ago had the "Belle" in a museum under cover just asking.

Hi Cinders. Yes the Widow is in rebuild - have been watching it get organized over the last decade or more - now out to the engines. I hope to see her in the air one day.
The Belle is a copy - converted a H to a G apparently. Still when the sky grey dark and the mists and clouds met, I stood before her in silence imagining the scene was one of the many bomber bases in Britain in '44.
We had 2 air worthy B29s this year - although Doc was only on static display and you could climb the nose wheel ladder to see the offices inside.

I had a good time with my daughter this year but the show seems to be slowly losing it's luster. I was a bit disappointed in that a show with the only two airworthy B-29's in the world couldn't get the pair of them up in the air at the same time.
Other than Doc, I believe every plane there has been there the past three years in a row. Numbers are way down and several advertised didn't show for the second year in a row. It's still a very enjoyable experience but it seems to have peaked a few years ago and begun a slow decline. The vets won't be around much longer either and could be part of it.

One of our small town's former Mayors was a Flying Tiger. In his later years, he spent a lot of time at the LGS with his "seeing eye" dog. Our local airport was renamed in his honor, and a restored P-40(C?) was brought in with his name and numbers on it for the dedication ceremonies. Everyone got to see the P-40 make a few passes that day at the "fly-in." That was really a sight to see (and hear) along with the mayor being able to attend and sit in the cockpit. He's gone now, and so is the LGS owner who always kept a chair there just for the Mayor, along with a spot for his faithful guide dog. - Bob

Silly question. How do you use the British style can opener on the pocket knife shown in post 4 third pic from left on table lower left corner. When I use this style can opener I get a very rough raised edge. What am I doing wrong???
