i've heard some odd stories from all five uncles addressing their boot experiences but......
"it was common practice for a boot to sleep with a bunk full of garands?"

In my outfit we had to detail strip our rifle and then sleep _on_ the parts

and this activity of sleeping on parts instilled honor ? pride ? long term memory ? discipline for not cleaning your rifle ?
