A Collector's View - The SMLE Short Magazine Lee Enfield 1903-1989. It is 300 8.5x11 inch pages with 1,000+ photo’s, most in color, and each book is serial-numbered. Covering the SMLE from 1903 to the end of production in India in 1989 it looks at how each model differs and manufacturer differences from a collecting point of view along with the major accessories that could be attached to the rifle. For the record this is not a moneymaker, I hope just to break even, eventually, at $80/book plus shipping. In the USA shipping is $5.00 for media mail. The information you looked at that says the Remington (a Model 1903A3, by the way) was made in 1942 is incorrect. The actual date the receiver was serialized was about June, 1943. The Smith-Corona also dates to about June, 1943.

Some other things to look for:

    1) Are both rifles still in military condition?

    2) If they are, look on the barrels just below the front sights - there should be a month/year date - what are they?

    3) Describe the stocks - is the "small of the stock"-area "straight, a full pistol grip, or sort of a "semi"? Look on the left side of the stocks near the ON-OFF lever (cutoff) - are there any stampings? On the SC stock, look just forward of the trigger guard - there may be several geometrical symbols with numbers. Is any of them a diamond with a number?

    4) The Remington, if correct, should have a number of the parts marked with an R stamp, like the bolt, bands, etc. The Smith Corona should not have these markings. If it does, they are replacements.

    5) Describe the finish of the rifles - are they more or less the same finish overall, or are many of the parts (rear sight, bands, trigger guard, bolt, etc.) a blue/black with the barreled receiver a gray or gray/green?

    6) If you can post some good-quality pictures, that would be especially helpful. If you have the digital pictures but don't know how to post them, you can send me a private message through this forum and we can make arrangements so I can post them for you.
