WHY WONT MY (AX) WaA280 BAYONET LUG TAKE A K98 BAYONET?
Hey guys, i bought a bayonet for my K98 yesterday but alas it doesnt fit! the bayonet is stamped "42CPS" or "42CrS" its hard to see. It has WaA519 stamped on the hilt, it has bakelite handles and is in great shape. it came with original leather frog. Very nice overall. It also fits my VZ24 perfectly
My K98 is an (42) Oberndorf action/barrel made in 1938 and it has been put into an (AX) walnut stock. The WaA on the stock are "WaA280" and the bayonet lug also has "WaA280" stamped on it. I hoped that with my rifle being a mixmaster it must have had a non k98 bayonet lug fitted at some point but i guess with the waffenamts matching the stock its the right lug. The lug itself is unusual because it has 2 slots on it, one on either side.
Whats going on here?!
I thought that with the germans obsession with interchangeable parts, all k98 bayonets would fit all k98's. Do i need another bayonet or do i need another bayonet lug?
Can anyone cast some light on this predicament!?

Is there a ding on the one side of the lug? Or do you mean it won't start on at all?

It starts to go on but after about 10mm it gets jammed. It slots right onto my vz24 fine just not this AX one

See, there appears to be a big burr on the first notch and I wonder if it's jamming things?

I got it on! It just needed a little extra lovin to get it on there. It is TIGHT!
Could be a burr. Could be different tolerances in different factories?
Why does my lug have 2 notches? My other mausers have only one

If you look long enough, you'll find a bayonet with the button other side...I don't know which one. If you look though, you'll see the burr underneath that's making it tight. Just a pass with the jewler's file will do...
