Hey Jim,
Is it John Henry Pruitt?

Now how the heck did you know John Henry II? He actually won two MOH's, as did Hoffman. Pruitt has the distinction (to my knowledge) of being the only sniper to ever be awarded a MOH, much less two.

Hey Jim,
Mr. Google told me. Get a prize? Took a little while. Looked through the entire list of WWI soldiers that earned the MOH. John Henry is listed as earning the medal at Mont Blanc and after taking out two Heinie mg nests and capturing forty prisoners, was killed by shrapnel while sniping at the enemy. Doesn't state that he was a scout sniper. Then searched for the ship named for him. Was very busy in the Pacific in WWII before being scrapped in 46'. Destroyer that earned three battle stars. Thanks for the question. John was only twenty two when he was killed. His action kinda' reminds me of SGt. York.
Two other snipers earned MOH'S. The Delta snipers that were killed in Somalia. Not USMC, but snipers. They had to know that they were gonna die. Have a copy of "Black Hawk Down" , thing I will bring it out to the Peaceshack and make that my next read.
Death to the Hun, and Somalie bad guys,

Those Somalia snipers deserve everything they can get. I don't know that I could have done what they did. I agree with you that they knew the odds were way against them. God bless their souls.
So many really good men have died so we can have the government we have elected. I wonder if they would have second thoughts if they could see what we have done with our rights they died for?
I don't recall who said it, but someone once said those who surrender their freedoms for security will have neither. He was dead on right!

I always like to refer to heroes by name, they were:
MSG GARY GORDON, US Army, 1SFOD-D
SFC RANDALL (Randy) SHUGHART, US Army, 1SFOD-D

Your quote was from Ben Franklin.

You are right. Thanks for providing their names, Mike. They deserve all the respect one can muster. It is odd how we remember some heroes forever and never even know of others. I read all 52 MOH commendations of WWI, and I am amazed we only remember Sgt. York, whose deeds pale in comparison to some of the other awardees. One man was wounded nine different times and kept fighting to save his fellow soldiers - true to form, I cannot remember his name.
I agree with Ole' Ben.

Hey Mike,
Sorry... you are correct. I should have posted Gordon and Shughart's names. Thanks for doing so.
