    M1 Carbine Estate Find Q's

I posted this on a couple other boards, but they seemed a bit slow. Found this board and thought I'd ask here!

Was wondering if you guys had any thoughts on this...
I'm not to familiar with carbines.

I picked up a bunch of M1icon stuff from an estate recently. Included was one new unassembled Springfield commerical receiver, one new barrel ( I don't know the make ), a bolt, a couple barrel bands, buttplates, spare stock, and two complete carbines.

One of the carbines is an Underwood, and one is an Inland. They both appear to have been completely rebuilt/restored? , and look unfired. They each have what appears to be a correct sling with the oiler.

The catch? They have both been rebarreled in 5.7 MMJ. I did some searching around to learn about the cartridge, and it looks like a pretty neat little round. The package came with a full ammo can ( 1,000 rounds maybe? ) of loaded 5.7 ammo on stripper clips, and maybe a couple hundred more unprimed cases.

Should I try and find a correct barrel for each gun or would you think somebody would be interested in having them in the 5.7 chambering?

    Picture gallery here.

I would sell everything you have and buy one nice 30 cal. carbine.
You can make a profit and sell to someone who likes the 5.7.
I would keep one of the 5.7 if you reload.
The spare barrel you have is a HERLO chrome lined.

    Thanks for the quick reply!

Ok, I did a quick search on "herlo" barrels and it seems the chrome lined ones are iffy ? Maybe I should throw it up on GB and take whatever I get for it ?

The slow twist HERLO barrels are junk. I wrote an article for the CC NL about them last year.

Unfortunately, the 5.7 MMJ conversion never became popular. With the passage of years, there are no longer gun magazine articles about it, & most folks aren't familiar with it. I have seen several guys walking around with them at gun shows trying to sell them (without success).

It's really not cost effective to rebarrel carbines for sale. A nice USGI barrel wil cost $400-500, installed. Some fellas are sitting on barrels & can do the job themselves, so just list them AS IS on a auction site & you should do OK.

You should do well selling the SA Inc receiver, as it is a decent receiver to use for a build.
