A Collector's View - The SMLE Short Magazine Lee Enfield 1903-1989. It is 300 8.5x11 inch pages with 1,000+ photo’s, most in color, and each book is serial-numbered. Covering the SMLE from 1903 to the end of production in India in 1989 it looks at how each model differs and manufacturer differences from a collecting point of view along with the major accessories that could be attached to the rifle. Thanks, Chuck. I appreciate your willingness to share your expertise.

My sons and I got to the range to shoot it yesterday. After we determined that the A4 liked 180 grain Federal Powershoks better than the 150 grains, and a bit of tinkering with the Weaver 4X Marksman scope, my son put three into a 5 and 1/2 inch reactive target @ 100 yards. That is NOT going to make it any easier to take this nicely done sporter apart. I love an accurate rifle.

There was a fairly stiff left to right cross wind, so I figured this was pretty close to being dead on.

belive it or not, it will shoot better if done right, should have 5 inside a dime.
    with 168GRN match ammo.
all my A4,s with good scopes will shoot inside a dime at 100 yards.

My A4 has one drawback, that scope. Mercy, couldn't the Army follow the footsteps of the Marines and get a quality scope?

Jim, what kind of scope did the Marines use? Maybe I'll restore it as a Marine sniper rifle.

the Marines used a 1903A1 sniper rifle, with a 8 powers Unertle Scope..
some A4,s were used by the Marines, but they used the same lame scope the Army did.

    Nuts!

I've got an 03 collector's book "The Collectable '03" by J.C. Harrison. It is thick spiral bound white book that has a lot of collectors information.

At any rate, on page 233 there is a drawing of a "MC-1" Kollmorgen 4X scope and indications that it might have been used on the A4's. I have a civilian 4X Kollmorgen scope that looks very similar to the MC-1 and was hoping that it was an alternate issue scope for the 03A4.

no Kollmorgans were used A4,s by the military..24MM rings are tough to find..
the only scope used on an A4 when issued is a Weaver 330C M73B1...
Harrisons book like all the books he wrote...is full of errors and some just plane BS.
i asked him about it once. he just smiled.
i gathered that if he wasnt sure, he would just make something up..

    as for replacement scopes...
    heres a list.
    Weaver M8
    Lyman AK.
    Lyman M82 marked AK.
    M84 made by Libby Glass.
Weaver K4-60-B. mostly used my law inforcement, and prison use..only ones o have seen, are in the RIA Museum, and they were donated by a PD or SO.
any other scope would been added by someone other then the military.
