    Springfield 1903 history, etc. questions

    Hi everyone. FNG here. Retired USMC. Hoping to learn a bit about my various rifles and guns I have hear for hunting. I have just inherited a U.S. Springfield armory model 1903 with serial numbers I374377. onthe side of the safety above trigger in stock is S.A. then under that is stamped GAW. to the right of that is a circle symbol with what looks to be crossed cannons? flip up rear adjust sight w/slide. A P stamped in stock behind trigger guard. No serial number on metal plate butt stock. wear the bayonett clips on under side has the letter H, the barrel stamped R29 , No other markings or numbers that I can see. Can anyone tell me the roots of my gun ? I'm trying to totally clean this gun up. it was sitting in a barn for 30 years. Trying to figure out how to best polish up the metal? It was all layered with crud and dirt and dust. Corrosin starting. Tips best way to restore metal on this weapon. Thankyou.

    Hello

    HI Fellow Collectors;
    I have been collecting since I was 3 yrs old, as my dad came home from WWII and gave me to his mother to raise and left some military items behind with me, and so it began a life long incurable collecting virus.

    HI

    Hi Guys, not really a "collector" more like a afficando for P.38, P08, 1911, Tokarev, pistols and rifles, WWI & WWII US rifles, CCCP 91/30s. Glad to be aboard

    Hello ! New member from Ohio. Although I have a few modern firearms nothing better than wood and metal. M1icon Garands, Carbines and military trainers are my passion. A registered user of The CMPicon and frequent The CMP NS as often as I can. I'm also a member of the GCAicon and obviously the NRA. I also love my rimfires and bayonets. I frequent The CMP, US Militaria and RFC forums. I hope to be able to contribute info as well as receive info from the members here.

    A new member from Scotland

    Hi,
    I am taking this opportunity to introduce myself. I have been an active target shooter for 40+ years, initially with handguns then ,post the UKicon handgun ban, military rifles.
    My main interest being in German Military firearms and I have built up a small collection. Since semi-auto full bore rifles are also prohibited I am restricted to bolt action,
    That said, I purchased a modern copy of the MP44 as "straight pull" having in earlier years owned a WW2 item which had been modified to semi-auto.
    My most recent acquisition is a K98icon in 7.92 X 33 !! Over here in the UK we are not at all sure about it so comments would be appreciate. To that end I hope to strip it down and produce some photos. It shoots well and somewhere in its history the rear sight has been given a "square" notch. (Gives a reasonable sight picture for my old eyes)
    Look forward to contributing to the group.
