S.G serial numbers

I have a S.G. carbine with a Inland General motors barrel dated 11-43. I took the butt plate off as the screw is slightly stripper and found there is a matching serial number on the stock. Is this standard on carbines?

Do you mean that there were numbers under the BUTTPLATE? Or along the right side. If under the buttplate, then it was done by someone other than thw US Army Ordnance Corps. If along the right side, it was most likely Isreal.

What is the approximate serial number. Is it a 3.6 million or so. If it is a 3.6 million there is a pretty good chance it is not a Saginaw S.G. but instead a Saginaw S'G' made in Grand Rapids, MI not Saginaw, MI. Sometimes the "prime" marks are very light or even absent after the "G" but present after the "S".

I am not aware of any circumstance where the serial number is stamped on the stock of a carbine during US use. There are a lot of other countries that had this practice. As landtrain mentioned the Israelies stamped the serial number on the left side of the buttstock. Others stamped just the last four numbers of the serial number in the sling cut.

The S/N is 36162** and is under the Buttplate. In the sling well is a "IR" and what looks to be a flaming bomb. The trigger assembly looks slightly brown. Mike you are correct it is a S' G'. I don't see a import mark anywhere. The mag relaese has a M underlined and the safety lever has something that looks like a "S". Behind the trigger assembly in another number 134. That's all I can see without dismantling it.

The 11-43 barrels are very common on the last batch of S'G' carbines in the 3.6 million range. I have 3.639 million S'G' that also has the 11-43 Inland barrel. I still don't know who marked stocks with the serial number under the buttplates. If you bought this carbine for the price of a SG you did very well. The stock is a field replacement item.
