while deployed to RVN one of the mechanics slipped over to the army base and stole a tank. He drove it to our base and hid it under a big tarp behind the mechanics shop. Sunday, he's going to drive it a bit when the XO spots him in the tank. I think he got a busted down to recruit.

Just proves a couple of things
1.you don't need a college degree to fly a military aircraft
2. You don't need to be an officer to fly a military aircraft.

Chuck Yeager was an Enlisted pilot for a while in WW2
A more pressing issue is; if you can't trust an enlisted man with hard liquor at the EM club, how can you hand him the keys to a $30 Million jet? That's the real reason that the pilots must be officers. My AF buddies from the 50- 60s say that they routinely took aircraft off and flew them around after maintenance to see if they were OK. Nobody said squat. Allan in particular had 5000 hrs in aircraft of one type or another and he was fully instrument rated. He was a Sergeant in the USAF.
