    Talking China Banner Mauser

A friend of mine that splits a couple of tables with us at a local firehouse gunshow, brought in some goodies today. First being a pretty nice China Banner Mauser with a really fine bore and the second being a very nice 1943 M38 Mosin (I'll post pics in the next post). The Mauser has a duffel bag cut on it and a mis-matched bolt, but, I really don't mind. I was looking for a new 8 m/m shooter and would have gladly picked up another Russianicon re-furb for what I paid for the Banner. I have to check the headspace tonight and do a little cleaning on it, but, I'm real happy to log this one in-SDH

Out of curiosity - how do you know it's Chinese? Is it so marked?

Had the remains of one with the "gearwheel" KMT mark around the reverse swastika. These Chinese Mausers get less respect than Carcanos, yet they are extremely historic firearms. Most probably saw a great deal of active service in a variety of conflicts.

I'm going with the working as well as the historical. I gotta shoot it, if only for a few time's. I'll let my kids figure out if they want to keep it for history when the time comes-SDH

First off, greetings to the fine folks here. Been lurking for a while, but it's time to join the conversation. Thought I would resurrect this old thread because it came up in a forum search and the title is spot on.

I picked up a Mauser Standard Modell over the weekend and would like some opinions about what it is that I have here. I know that pictures are necessary, but the rifle is at my gunsmith (more to follow about that) and I don't have any. I'll post them as soon as I get the piece back. (He was actually a little excited about it. He overheard me explaining this to his wife in the front of their shop and came out to see for himself.)

The receiver has the Mauser banner, with no year stamped underneath. The serial number on the side is 6342e. The Chinese Sun stamp is on both sides of the receiver toward the front. None of the other serialized parts match. In fact, there is not a matching number to be found on the rifle anywhere. The stock has a stenciled '30' on the left hand side to the rear of the bolt disassembly disc. No other cartouches were visible to me after my initial inspection. The wood is very dark and has had a major crack at the wrist repaired. The barrel has a Liege proof stamp with a star 'x' for the inspector.

I took the rifle out to the range this afternoon with my other K98s, one all-matching 1940 Radom-Steyr and one non-matching mutt. Now, I just took it for granted that it was 8mm, but I couldn't close the bolt on those. Upon calm reflection and some slack-jawed staring at the Liege proof, I decided it was likely 7mm. So I took it to my gunsmith and await his ruling on the matter.

Thanks in advance for any thoughts this may trigger, so to speak, from anyone. Again, I'll post pics as soon as get it back.

Greetings back... Perhaps instead of resurrecting this old thread, you should have just started a fresh one. We could use pics for this find of yours...it casts a great deal of light on things. You may be quite right about the caliber...you could have checked the bore for size, it would have given you a good idea. (bullet in the muzzle)
    Regards, Jim
