    Scotarms

Went to the Scotarms auction at Newark today and managed to get away without buying a gun. I was seriously considering having a punt on a 22 SMLE which had been smoothbored to have as a re-lining project. Thankfully the price climbed out of my bracket quite quickly. I think it's now somebody elses re-lining project.
The only P14/17s there were a Winchester P14 that had been sporterised. It looked basically sound, but will take some work to get back to military trim. Thankfully it did sell, so I hope it went to a restorer. The other was a M1917 that had been issued to one of the arctic research stations for protection against polar bears. The sight ears had been removed along with the rear sight and a fixed "V" rear sight installed on the receiver ring. This one would be a good candidate for sporterisation, provided you could do it yourself or get it done economically.
Also met up with Alan de Enfield from the Lee Enfield forum, nice to be able to put a face to the name.
