Maybe it was U.S. Carbine CAL. 30 m2 that was ground off.

A Collector's View - The SMLE Short Magazine Lee Enfield 1903-1989. It is 300 8.5x11 inch pages with 1,000+ photo’s, most in color, and each book is serial-numbered. Covering the SMLE from 1903 to the end of production in India in 1989 it looks at how each model differs and manufacturer differences from a collecting point of view along with the major accessories that could be attached to the rifle. The ATF guy sounded nice on the phone but I could hear him jingling the cuffs in the background. If it turns out to be an M2, it will be three hots and a cot for me and I won't get a chance to vote against Obama in 2012!

Before you get a new serial number, it might be possible to recover the original serial number of the carbine with modern forensic techniques:

Thanks Brian - what a contrast! Doesn't look like I'm going to have much to impress the ATF folks with.
