G.33/40 Unit Markings?

A 1940, 945 code, G.33/40 rifle has the following stamped on the buttplate, " III 3 ". Anyone have a good source for WW II German unit markings. These rifles were used by mountian units, paratrooper units, and were furnished to their allies. Romania, Hungery, and Finland all had mountian units that at one time were issued German equipment.

I do not believe 'unit markings' were used by Germany during WW11.

As evidenced by the photo, there are unit markings on this G.33/40 buttplate. the weapon has no post war use history. The marking were applied during WWII,... By?????

They do not look like German Unit markings to me, however I can only compare them with WW1 German Unit marks. If they are unit marks then they changed their system. I have many WW11 German rifles and a few WW1 and none of the WW11 rifles have unit marks.

The Germans did not unit mark their rifles durring the WW 2 period.
IF that is a unit mark, I have no idea from what country. 33/40s were used post war. You know where that 33/40 has been since WW 2?
I've never read anywhere that the Germans sold/gave rifles to Finland. I'd be interested in your source.

No, I can not remember exactly were I obtained the information on German equipment to Finland. At my age, I'm doing well to remember what I had for breakfast. However, somewhere in the last sixty plus years of WWII interest, I read it, or had conversations with persons who were there. But it is a historical fact that Germany provided arms to Finland in their "War of Continuation" against the Soviet Union. I don't remember where I read that B.H. Obama was elected president either, but it did happen. Yes, I do know where the rifle has been since its 1945 surrender to American forces in Czechoslavakia.

Germany did provide arms to Finland, including Italian Carcanos. I have no idea if any G.33/40's were included.

A considerable number of 33/40 Mausers were imported to Germany in recent years from Norway. These usually have a police stamp. I have never seen a 33/40 with a German unit mark.

i got a g33/40 all numbers match from a vet ,he brong back,theres no unit mark on mine

The unit marking on the G33/40 were IMHO Romanian. Their mountain units were equipped with German equipment in 1942, and had it taken away when Romania signed a separate peace with the Soviet Union. The rifle in question was taken from German troops in Czechoslovakia in 1945.
