    Question to Peter Laidler ( LE No.4 MK.I*)

    Hello Peter,

    i have a question about rust on an barrel. My Savage made LE has this marking on the chamber "*" wich means, as far as i know, rust found in barrel. But there is only rust on the barrel. The question is how deep and how large must the rust be, that you would say this rifle is not safe for shooting?
    I added some pics to show you what i mean. BTW i couldn`t find any FTR marking on the rifle. Please be so kindly and send me an answer.

    Thank you in advance.

    Regards,

    Gunner

    The star was put on the barrel in the approximate place where the rust was situated inside the barrel. Externally, it was visible of course. The reason why a star was put there was so that the poor old squaddie wouldn't keep on getting a bollocking, year after year, for the same old rust!

    The rust you have shown is typical of the rust we encountered every day in the tropics on the No4's and 5's, SLR's and Brens. But the rust problem there was a billion times worse, believe me......... You have absolutely nothing to cause you concern. We'd just reassemble that rifle with a good dollop of XG279 grease and make a note that in a year or so, it could be withdrawn for a FTR. A good strip, bead blast, phosphate and hot oven bake with sunkorite and it'll last you for another 100 years. Do you have those facilities in BAOR now, via the old boy net? If you've got the first, I'll send you a tin of paint to finish the job! In the meantime, go and give it a bit of welly. Ah, yes '......bit of welly' That's another REME technical phrase indicating the need to give it a good stonking, as in '....get the barrel hot'!

    Peter;

    Thanks from others too. I like it when a real expert can step in to allay the fears some of us have.

    (My brother's 69 VW has a dent in the fender. Does that make my Enfield dangerous to shoot? Just jokin' all )

    PS: Perhaps Gunner is DHaR. Deutsche Heer am Rhein.

    Thanks for your comments Ing, but please don't call me an expert. I'm just an Armourer who's telling you what I was taught and learned. Just reasonably knowledgeable person sounds about right

    A 69 VW too, magnificent......what sort?

    "Reasonably knowledgeable person"... Hmm, ok, if we accept that as a slight euphemism,

    Peter, this is our G22 Accuracy Internatioal AW in.300Win Mag. This one has a suppressor mounted but it`s not to see in the pic.
