    it reduces NOISE (probably)

CO2 (and PCP "pre-charged pneumatic") airguns use "moderators" to reduce the noise and make them "backyard friendly" which is another way of saying you can kill squirells in the burbs without having the neighbors callig the cops. Technically, "moderators" cannot be screwed or otherwise come on and off or theyMIGHT be considered as a class-three suppresspr. Airgun people are EXTREMELY sensitive about this and the proper words to use is NEVER EVER supreszor but "LDC." Now get this. You know what LDC stands for? "Lead Dust Collectooor"!! If you want to learn about airguns, the ground zero for anything and everything airguns (I go here more than CSPicon) is the "Yelllow FOrum."

How well this one works, who knows, but with rifles, people can apparently get what is fairly loud (like a .22 rimfire) down to mouse-farts level. The new Benjamin Marauder has a built in shroud that, when you shoot it (and it is VERY powerful), you only hear the little bolt thingee ting.

    **that's** a Benjamin???

Man, I been living in a cave. We had 2 benjamins among 3 brothers when we were kids. One kid had to use the bow and arrows. We would bring in small game, our mother would cook it. Mom would cook anything!

My brother Eric posts regularly on an airgun forum, don't know if it's that one.

I had thought the comps on the umarex pistols to be just for balance but i see that one is described to suggest it is a working muzzle comp. FWIW- If you shoot CO2 pistols indoors wear your hearing protection. I hurt myself pretty bad with a Umarex pistol in the basement and ended up with tinnitis and "shooters dropout" which is permanent.

At 395 FPS muzzle velocity, I think the compensator is to replicate an actual 45 competition pistol. If it were a much higher velocity, it may have an impact on recoil.
