    F4dphantomII,
I live about 12 miles east of Lansing, in Williamston.
See if they'll let you take the stock off for inspection.
I just heard about a Saginaw from up that way that has a cracked gas piston...that's very bad news.
Look that Saginaw over closely for any import markings on the barrel or the rear right side of the receiver. Really even if a import for that kinda $$ it's gotta be worth the price, unless the receiver has been cut in two and rewelded....look closely. If so it's only worth the sum of the other parts.
Any idea of the serial # range?
Did you notice if it had the late features like a bayonet band and adj rear sight?
Any markings in the slingwell or on the right rear side of the stock?
    Just wondering if it's a Hi-wood or low-wood stock vs a M2 potbelly stock.
As far as the gloss on the stock.....you can always strip off the top coat.
Feel free to ask more questions if needed. If not let us know how it goes.

    Good Luck

Do like Charlie suggests. It could be a real find or a good find at that price or junk, then walk away.

Forgive my ignorance but can the gas piston be replaced?Or would you have to replace the whole barrell assembly?

The one I had heard about had the gas cylinder cracked. Not the piston. I should have been more clear. A piston can be replaced. It might need a new nut and the threads reamed but a cracked cylinder is a questionable fix.
