A Collector's View - The SMLE Short Magazine Lee Enfield 1903-1989. It is 300 8.5x11 inch pages with 1,000+ photo’s, most in color, and each book is serial-numbered. Covering the SMLE from 1903 to the end of production in India in 1989 it looks at how each model differs and manufacturer differences from a collecting point of view along with the major accessories that could be attached to the rifle. The rifleman is Leupolds basic entry level scope. They are OK and have clear optics, but not as good as the VX-series. For little more money you can get a VX-II and it is a far better scope. Next up is the VX-III. The difference is in the lens coatings. Better lens coatings = better light transmission. High end scopes with good coatings and bigger lenses don't "gather" more light, they merely transmit the light better. You will be through hunting for the day with a rifleman, while your buddy with a VX-III will still be on his stand.

If price is an issue, look at the Nikon Pro-Staff series. I have been impressed with their quality and clarity for the money they cost. The 3x9x40 retails for $150 in our store and the 3x9x50 is about $200.

    HTH,

    Emri

I have several of the low cost "rifleman" series, all of mine in 2-7 power, and like them very much. For the price, they are a good bargain. As far as I know, the excellent Leupold warranty extends to these scopes, although I have never needed to take advantage of it.

I have one nikon low cost scope, and several of the Leupold high end scopes. I would prefer the Leupold.

True, the rifleman series may not have as good coating, but unless you are going to hunt after dark, I doubt that the normal user would notice the difference.
