K98 Markings

Hello,

I have just picked up this Portuguese K98 dated 1941, was hoping someone could help me with letting me know what these strange markings mean?

First 2 are West German proof house markings so I would guess that there is an RC X on the rec. Nr 3 is standard WW 2 German proof marking.

Sarge, I don't think I've ever seen a Portuguese, Russian Capture. What makes you think it is? The finish doesn't look to be refurbed. It actually looks to be original. The waffenampts on the stock are sharp and the crest is intact. It's to bad he didn't post a pic of the serial numbers or mention whether or not they match.
Unless the rifle was rerouted from a Portuguese order and issued to axis troops, or captured in a German depot before being delivered, I haven't heard of Portuguese troops ever fighting the Russians.

The serial is as in the photo G441, all matching, cant see and russian stampings anywhere.

The Russians got at least one of the Portuguese 1941 Mausers. I picked up this RC K98 at an on-line estate sale a few months back.






A contract Portuguese 1941 K98. According to Ball's MMRotW, these rifles were originally made by Mauser for the Portuguese, but released to the Wehrmacht in 1944. Guess the Russkies got it eventually.

Sarge got right. The first is " Nitro Beschuss" ( Proofmark for Nitropowders ) the second is " Beschussamt München " ( Proofhouse Munich ).

About 20K (?) of the second order - dated 41, in the G range - was rerouted to the Whermacht in 41/42. They were all proofed in the German military style. They were replaced with a like nr or rifles at the end of the contrakt.
I have owned and seen about 6 or 7 of the RC Portuguese rifles. I just sold a real nice one last Mai. All of the ones I saw were the normal RC mixmasters. None had been reblued.

Regardless of whether your rifle has the RC X on it, it is most likely an RC as this was the source for the rifles that went thru the W German proof houses for commercial sale. Not all RCs had the X.
You say your rifle is all matching, any pencil etched nrs? Is the stock numbered on the left side?

Hello, no electro pencil, all stamped numbers. (that dont look dodgy)
