Need trig house to receiver screw help - new 03a3

Just acquired my first 03a3, a Remington, SN 4133321 with RA 12-43 barrel. It has a USGI straight stock.

The rear mounting screw behind the trigger guard (installed from underneath) is approx 1 1/2 inches long and when tightened, lacks about 1/4 to 3/8 inches of travel from coming flush with the top of the threaded hole in the back of the receiver (viewed from top). It appears to grab only a few threads before bottoming out on the bottom at the rear of the trigger guard. Is this typical, or should the screw be longer?

    Many thanks for your advice.

It is typical for the screw not to be flush with the top of the hole.

colreed what you are observing is a production change implemented during WW2. In earlier 03's the hole we are discussing was a blind hole and required a bottoming tap as well as more care during manufacture. One of the many wartime changes made was to simply drill the hole straight through. Not as pretty but just as effective.

    Regards,

    Jim

Makes a lot of sense. Apparently, when the prod change drilled the hole thru the back of the receiver, it was threaded the full length. But am guessing that the screw was not changed (lengthened) to travel thru the extra threads on the upper end of the hole.
    Many thanks.
