If the package was marked Hadley, it was a direct contract with Ordnance. If it were made for Smith Corona as a sub contract, the package would be marked Smith Corona. To date I have yet to see an exception where both markings were on the package.

A Collector's View - The SMLE Short Magazine Lee Enfield 1903-1989. It is 300 8.5x11 inch pages with 1,000+ photo’s, most in color, and each book is serial-numbered. Covering the SMLE from 1903 to the end of production in India in 1989 it looks at how each model differs and manufacturer differences from a collecting point of view along with the major accessories that could be attached to the rifle. For the record this is not a moneymaker, I hope just to break even, eventually, at $80/book plus shipping. In the USA shipping is $5.00 for media mail. Mislead by Poyer again (The M1903 Springfield Rifle and Its Variations)

In what he terms a Type 8 sear, he states "those manufactured by Smith Corona were often marked X."

In what he terms a Type 7 trigger, he states they were "marked.....X for Smith Corona." He further states that "The (sp) have the thin tip on the finger piece like the earlier triggers."

Pretty contradictory to the advice that I have received on this thread. I suppose he subscribed to the theory that X marks the spot for Smith Corona as an extension of their bolt marking practice.

Thanks again all for supplying me with good info.
