Duh, 359 is Walther, not Orbendorf.... I was thinking back to my G43, don't know why I even suggested orbendorf originally.

ok, here's the full answer. In 1941 Hitler ordered Operation Barbarossa. After initial successes, the eastern front began taking a toll on the Wehrmacht's equipment reserves just as the Luftwaffe started taking in large numbers of allied prisoners. Guess what? The Luftwaffe guards didn't have enough K98k's to guard the camps (and whatever else Luftwaffe troops did) and the Heer wasn't willing to give up any of their production allotment to kit out the Luftwaffe.
As a result, the Luftwaffe got access to a number of Walther manufactured armorer's replacement receivers and the leftover receivers from when BSW ceased production and transferred all their machinery to Gustloff Werke.
Most of the parts came from subcontractors and replacement parts from the supply chain. All are Luftampt marked rifles in the "e" block and generally have blank receivers with just a small WaA359 or bsw marking at the woodline. It is thought less than 7000 rifles were assembeled at Krieghoff for the Luftwaffe's use, making it one of the rarest K98k variants one is likely to encounter in any condition at all For some reason there seems to be a low survival rate, or possibly there are gaps in the known serial range.
Nifty, huh?

Well, I reckon my guess that it was an early production Cooey would not have washed..........
Any time I read these boards I realize how much I REALLY do not know. And the hard part is, I don't know what I don't know.

PS) Very interesting piece, Ron!
I am military surplus myself....but I have no collector value........a bit rusty, a few parts missing, seen some rough service, but have been well oiled over the years....

You know, I think I had one of these when I was younger. It sure looked purty after cleaning it up with the wire wheel and scoping it.
