A Collector's View - The SMLE Short Magazine Lee Enfield 1903-1989. It is 300 8.5x11 inch pages with 1,000+ photo’s, most in color, and each book is serial-numbered. Covering the SMLE from 1903 to the end of production in India in 1989 it looks at how each model differs and manufacturer differences from a collecting point of view along with the major accessories that could be attached to the rifle. Maybe I'll dig out a sling swivel one just to put that to rest.

Why would they add swivels? "Why" is something I can speculate on. That they did, I have records for.

I suspect it was because of the new equipments; guns don't exist independently of the gear. The new and exciting Mounted arm was the M1903 - a gun with sling swivels.

Also a gun with a bayonet mount if you think about it. Mounted guys get swords. Swords were pretty much passe.

Interesting point of the day - that arsenal work in adding the bayonet mount to the carbines I've posted? It pre-dates the release of the Krags to schools by 4 years. Food for thought.
