Rock-Ola Stock Question
I posted the photo of the Rock-Ola stock a number of months back to find out what the “P” on the grip implies. One comment was “it looks like a chip missing in the wood” by someone trying to be cute. The stock is on a Rock-Ola, that according to Rich is at least all correct. Has anyone seen anything like this before on a RO, SN 4591498? I don’t think it is a normal proof mark.
PS I think the stock is a cutdown highwood.

That's either a inspection stamped P. Or a P stamped from a firing proof.
The circled P proofs (sans serif) in a .50 inch diameter were used by the following contractors....
Inland...off and out throughout production.
Winchester...very early only.
Underwood..early production.
IP and S'G' early production.

Agree with Charlie. It could also indicate a test/recheck without necessarily rebuilding anything. hth

Thanks for the input. When I purchased the Rock-Ola, several years ago, it had a lot of heavy cosmoline
in the receiver area. There are no rebuild marks anywhere I can see. When do you think the stock was cut down if in fact it was.

CC records/data actually show first usage of low wood for Rock-Ola beginning in the 6 million range. There may have been some overlap. It could have been a field mod or done prior to storage in an arsenal. The area was easily broken.

It was possible that the cut to low wood could have been done during the inspection, when the P was stamped.
Many of the Hi-woods are cracked with out the owners having noticed it yet.
I get plenty of stocks to refinish where the owner has noticed a crack that needs attention. Sometimes I find 4 or 5 more.
I have guys tap their stock on a hard surface like a baseball bat to hear if it's cracked or not. This will sound out the major ones.
