91/30 sniper clone

My first attempt with my 91/30 nagant sniper clone shot at 100, 200, and 300 metres with czech surplus ammo.

I did this build myself. I had some trouble getting the bolt handle done right other than that was a easy put together. I got the scope and mount off that guy from the UKRAINE via. ebay. Took only 9 days to get here.

I found that if you want to experience parallax in it's finest form use a PU scope. Between the long 12 lb. trigger pull combined with the parallax issues at 200 to 300 meters, and the difficulty of putting the tip of the vertical cross hair on the same place on the target a real challenge. No chance of a cheekweld, it is a chin weld with this rig. I gave up on attempts of using a center hold on target at 200 and 300 and setteled for a 6 oclock hold. I have loaded up some sierra .311 matchking's for my next outing to see if I can tighten up the group's a bit.

How does it do without the stand and rear bag? Can you get the same results off your rucksack? Really nice looking stock set.

These M91/30 rifles with decent ammunition are intrinsically accurate. I do agree with MJ1 with his comment "How does it do WITHOUT the stand and rear bag" but with a "field expedient rest" as per the "1944 Stalingrad Level IV Match For Real".

In the latter case my pick would be to shoot it prone off an 50 cal ammo can with a sandbag on top with a sand filled sock for a rear bag to see what it will do. Think of it as the "spirt of the mil surp game eh".

This suggestion is so that when you use this rifle as you can at a Historical Military Rifle Match you will have practiced in conditions that you could experience in such a competition as was shot at Connaught in 1998-2002 as part of the DCRA APM, There Figure 11's were used at distance of 300 metres..10 shots on score on a Fig 11. I shot the matches in 1998-2001 and 2002. My best score was 44 with 3 Vs on a Figure 11 with an issue Danish Springfield with 168 grain Black Hills match ammunition.

That is the key here for the MN 91-30..the "Ammo"..some real match loads.

Another suggestion here for shooting groups with a picket post scope is to use as large a bull as possible, post particulary for the 300 yard/300 metre distance. Bigger bull gives you a better discrimination as to "Ball on a stick" sighting picture.

There are a lot of these 91/30 rifles around going for $200-$250.00. I am going to do some experiments with one with some good match loads and using a extended eye relief scope (think USSR Scout rifle) mounted on the sight leaf or its equivalent. Will post my results here this Winter 2008.

Another suggestion would be have a "field expedient cheek piece" with some foam and duct tape as with the issue stock and scope as issued it is VERY difficult to get a consistent cheek weld nullifying somewhat the benefits of a machine rest bench rest sand bags front and rear.

Now your talking about marksmanship abilities not how well the rifle shoot's.
