22 Cal Carbine Conversion

There were a number of conversions of the M1 to .22 cal in the 60's. I think the most familiar was the 22 MMJ. Most involved just a barrel change to 22 cal and used the short stroke piston/inertia block of the M1.

This conversion was done for me by Bob Scheutz, Scheutzen Gun Works, in the late 60s. It uses a long stroke piston instead of the inertia block eliminating the upper hand guard. I did the stock from a rough blank. Blueing was by Pachmayer, Los Angeles. Barrel is 22 inches. I don't know the twist.

It works quite well. The extractor was modified to eject cases to the right but some are still ejected upward hitting the scope and bouncing back into the action. Rotating the scope 90 degress helps quite a lot. Accuracy is about fair. 1-3/4 inches or so.

The back of the action is acraglassed to the stock; the barrel at the end of the forend. Not really bedded, the stock is really just attached to the action. I suspect this bedding/attachment is the limiting factor on accuracy. I have never done much with load development.

This is the only one of these conversions I have ever seen and thought you might find it of interest.

Nice pictures, guy. Bob Scheutz'c version is just slightly different from the 5.7 MMJ. It is mentioned in Ackley's hanbook.
