Finding a stock for a World War One Mauser

Posted a thread a while back and finally identified (for sure) what my dad has. It's a WW1, 1918-made Danzig Mauser 98 Kar A.

It was sporterized without his permission while he was in Vietnam. He wants to return it as close as possible to original condition. The collector value is shot (it's been engraved with his dad's name and DL number) but it's a family keepsake.

Numrich has a lot of Mauser stocks, but none that I know are for a Kar A. Does anyone know just how closely a 98K stock would fit it (if it even would), or where to find a repro G98 stock that could be modified? Boyd's make 98k stocks, but without dimensions I don't know if they'd do a one-off.

Any other ideas on finding a correct stock?

Uncle has a Mauser as well, but that may be a 98K (and thus more easily returned to original condition).

Kar98a wood is very tough to find. No WWII production and they just are not around. Try the really big gunshow and good luck.

As Calif-Steve says, Kar98a wood is tough to find. You could get a Gew98 stock and do some carving at the front end. For the rear handguard, see if a handguard for a Brazil or Argentine Mauser can be fitted. For the front handguard, you will have to be inventive. But your real problem will be the hinged front band +bayonet lug + stacking swivel, which is unique to the Kar98a. So would be easier to look for a wall-hanger which can be plundered for parts.

Problem's finding another kar A.........period.

Anyone know just how much a full length 98's stock would need to be trimmed back, or how "weird" a 98K stock would look on it? (I don't know the dimensional differences for the stocks, not too worried about the upper handguard as much).

Kar98a's are small-ring Mausers. The Gew98's and the Kar98K's are all large-ring Mausers. Not gonna fly, as they are very different. Springfield Sporters had many stocks years back. Don't know about now. You need to find a large gunshow(Tulsa, Knob Creek) and work it hard. Ask everybody. You will run across the stock. Good luck.

Odd, I always thought the 98 Kar A was just a shorter 98. Didn't know it was a different ring size.

On a related topic, is the kar A safety the same as a standard 98/98k bolt safety?

Did you finally find that stock. I'm looking for the same thing and having one heck of a time doing it. They are just not that common. Please let me know if you find something, especially if they have more.
