Univ of Maryland Girls Rifle Team 1925 Pic

    Gentlemen:

I liked this pic when I ran across it and thought you guys might enjoy it as well. Can anyone ID all of the rifles here?

    Regards,

ps: By the way everyone. It's a large 1 megabyte sized pic and takes a while to appear loading from his site. Here's a smaller version for those with slow connections, although you may not be able to make out as much detail.

    What a great photo!

In keeping with the times, all the young ladies appear to be equipped with small bore rifles (no high powers for the "weaker sex").

As for the rifles, from left to right:

#1 Unknown (has a Lyman rear sight, so probably not a Winchester 52).

#2, 4, and 5 all have Winchester 1885 Winder Muskets, fitted with Lyman rear sights.

#3 and #6 both have Winchester Model 52s, fitted with service style rear sights and barrel mounted scope blocks.

#8 has a Springfield 1922 or 1922M1, fitted with Lyman rear and front sights.

In 1925, the U. of M. at College Park was primarily an agricultural school, so no big surprise at having a rifle team, or that they fielded women as well as men.
