M1 Rifle issue at P.I.

This picture was taken early 1950s of recruit being issued his first M1 Garand.
Former Marines of the 1950s may recall this picture in there Graduation book.

Sorry about this. I had attempted to post this picture in the "Picture of the Day" section of this forum. Screwed up somehow. Anyway, I did finally post it in the right place.

Great picture, thanks. Brings to mind an old Senior Drill Instructor quote:
"I cannot make you do what I tell you to do, but I can make you wish you did".

Herringbone twill with a banner eagle on the pocket. Irish pennant on his excess belt end, those guys are fresh from a hair trim and gear issue. The morning of the second day on the island I would guess. Note the coloration difference of the uniforms.

Thats likely the NCOIC of the rifle locker, or perhaps one of the drill instructors but he has no smokey hat. He has something stowed on the inside right side of his belt. I cant make out what it is.

Note the buttplates on the bulkhead. Likely ones that no longer had any checkering left from drill on the grinder. Great picture, thanks for posting it.

The first thing I noticed was the amount of belt end sticking out, and the absence of motivation in his eyes. I've had my share of recruits and these look brand new. I would be more interested in studying the stampings on his rifle however...

D.I.s didn't get the "Smokey Hat" until after early 1956. But you are mostly right in that being NCOIC of "rifle locker".
