If I am understanding that the rampant colt is between the patent dates and the Colt address, the slide is not original to the pistol. The rampant colt should be at the back of the slide behind the slide serrations.
Also, the original barrel would have had the Birmingham proof. It would be in a position where it could be viewed through the ejection port in the slide.

Yes Johnny you are correct in the fact that the rearing horse seperates the wording.........and the opposite side of the slide is devoid of stampings/wording apart from the proof mark as posted before.....
If i could field strip it is or are there any other marks i can find to ID fully.....
also what grips should this have on....the early "Lozenge" style ?

The right side of the slide should have COLT AUTOMATIC over CALIBRE .45 .
What about the proof mark on the barrel? It is beginning to sound more like you have military 1911A1 slide. Look behind the firing pin stop plate to see if any markings are there.
Do you have a digital camera to post photos?
